Domestic abuse figures are expected to rise over the Christmas period and the council is reminding people that there is help available 24 hours a day.
The financial strain experienced by families at Christmas time coupled with challenges faced by many families this year is expected to lead to the rise in cases.
People are urged in an emergency, to always call the police on 999.
For confidential support and advice call the National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247.
Domestic abuse is any incident of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of their gender or sexuality.
The abuse can be psychological and emotional, violent or threatening behaviour, physical and sexual, controlling or coercive behaviour and economic abuse.
Cabinet member for community safety Cllr Jonathan Cook said: "Christmas can be a financial and emotional strain, and this year, with the extra huge challenges brought by Covid, we are anticipating an increase in domestic violence over the festive period.
"Victims often don't even realise they are being abused, so we would ask everyone to keep an eye out for family members, friends and neighbours. If it is safe to do so, reach out and help them get support. If you're not sure what to do, you can get advice from the National Domestic Violence Helpline."
