Fees waived for Battersea to celebrate His Majesty the King's Coronation
Residents looking to mark the celebration of His Majesty The King's Coronation with street parties have had a layer of bureaucracy removed.
Wandsworth Council has waived fees associated with applications to close roads for street parties and other local authority led public events.
In addition, grants between £500 and £5000 are available to voluntary and community organisations who run events and activities to mark the occasion.
Local voluntary and community organisations, including residents' associations and faith groups, can apply to the King and Queen Consort's Coronation Grant Fund for community celebrations over the bank holiday weekend of May 6-8. The deadline to apply is March 19.
Grants can be for standalone events or for those run as part of the Coronation Big Lunch on May 6, 7 and 8 or the Big Help Out on May 8.
Groups organising events for people who could otherwise not access street parties near their home will be prioritised - for example because they are elderly, have a disability, or live in an area where traditional street-based parties might be difficult to deliver, like on some council estates.
The Coronation Big Lunch will be calling on people to share food and fun together on May 6, 7 and 8 in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. It can be anything from a cup of tea with a neighbour to a huge community party.
On May 8, The Big Help Out will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities. People are encouraged to try volunteering for themselves and join the work to support their local area to create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.
The King and Queen Consort's Coronation Grant Fund will consider funding to help organisations develop and deliver their Big Help Out activities, including additional staffing costs, volunteer expenses and other costs. It is anticipated that most grants will be of around £1,000, with larger awards considered where there is significant participation, inclusivity and scale.
The Mayor of Wandsworth Jeremy Ambache said: "We're keen to get as many applications as we can from all over our diverse communities so that all our residents have the opportunity to celebrate together. We're especially keen to support community and voluntary groups organising events for groups of residents not able to easily access a street party otherwise.
"We're also encouraging people to think about (a) voluntary help schemes that could have a lasting positive impact on our communities long after the Coronation is over. Over the past few months I have visited so many local groups and communities and I know how strong and united we are. Let's show the rest of London what Wandsworth can do!"
Apply to The King and Queen Consort's Coronation Grant Fund by March 19, 2023.
Find out more about street closures, and apply online. Applications must be submitted by Sunday April 2, 2023.
