Battersea Park playground's £250k refurb: "Ugly and impractical"

Battersea Park's toddler and junior playground has reopened to visitors after a £254,000 upgrade of its play equipment.

However, Battersea Nub News spoke to some parents who have been left disappointed.

One mother said the new climbing tower was ugly and impractical, without any visibility, she was unable to know exactly where her child was inside.

Although she was very impressed with the toddler's section of the playground.

A local father said the openness of one area had attracted older children from the local school who had dumped their belongings at the base of the structure making it impossible for the smaller children to climb.

All this new play equipment was chosen by local families and young children earlier this year in a public consultation with the council.

Families had three blueprints to choose from and the final result is a combination of the most popular elements of the two most favoured schemes.

The play area has a designated area for toddlers and another for children over the age of eight.

Adjacent to both is Battersea Park's adventure playground, also designed for children aged eight and above.

Over the past three years more than £1 million has been spent on children's play areas across Wandsworth.

It is part of a £8 million spend on local initiatives over the past three years including schemes to support safer communities, employment opportunities for young people, better pavements, improved parks and playgrounds.

The money comes from Wandsworth Local Fund which comprises money the council has levied on developers to help pay for community and local neighbourhood infrastructure improvements across the borough.

However Wandsworth's director of environment and community services Paul Chadwick has faith in the upgrade and said: "This has been a comprehensive and significant upgrade of the play equipment at one of the borough's busiest and most popular play areas.

"Now that it has re-opened I've no doubt young children in the area will really enjoy spending lots of time there."
