Battersea Park Children's Zoo marked World Bee Day on Saturday by sharing a series of photos of its apiary.

The apiary, which was opened in the Battersea zoo last year in partnership with the London Beekeepers association, teaches sustainable beekeeping to visiting children, educating them about wild pollinators and food production.

In a post on social media, the local zoo said: "Today bees and other pollinators are increasingly threatened with extinction as a result of human activity on the planets ecosystems - despite the fact that pollination is a fundamental process in the survival of these ecosystems and the species that rely on them, including humans!

"Nearly 90% of the world's wild flowering plants depend on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world's food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do bees contribute directly to food security, but they are vital to conserving biodiversity.

"Last year, we were incredibly proud to open our own educational apiary in partnership with the London Beekeepers Association to teach sustainable beekeeping and how we can all encourage and conserve native pollinators. This summer we are welcoming School Food Matters and their outreach programme, educating school children about bees, wild pollinators and food production."
