A prominent tree in Battersea Park has been left damaged following last week's Storm Eunice.

The Hybrid Strawberry tree in Battersea Park is the largest of its type in Britain.

Planted in the 1860s it is one of the Great Trees of London but suffered devastating damage in last week's storm.

The non-profit group Enable Parks Wandsworth are working hard to save whatever is possible of the remaining tree.

They told Battersea Nub News: "The hybrid Strawberry Tree is an important and historic landmark in Battersea Park, we are all very sad to see it sustain such significant damage during storm Eunice.

"Enable tree officers have assessed the tree and will be carrying out further tests to guide the ongoing management of the tree, and hope to be able to retain it as a viable asset in the park.

"We have implemented an enhanced monitoring programme and will be doing all we can to give it the best chance of survival."

The non-profit that looks after parks and trees in partnership with Wandsworth Council, they support the borough's Biodiversity Strategy, Parks Management and Tree Policy.

Storm Eunice battered the UK last Friday February 18 with winds reaching over 122mph in some parts of the country.
