58,000 bulbs to be planted to improve biodiversity at Battersea pocket park.

Councils across London have made pledges to tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions, one of the ways this can be done is through planting greenery and supporting greater bio-diversity.

Fred Wells Garden in Battersea's Vicarage Crescent has undergone a £316,000 revamp which is nearly finished and will see tens of thousands of bulbs planted to ensure visitors can enjoy some late winter and spring colour.

Enable Leisure and Culture, the borough's open spaces contractor, has been carrying out the revamp which includes a new child friendly soft surfacing laid in the playground, walls undermined by tree roots rebuilding and a widening of paths and stairways to ensure it is more family friendly for parents with buggies and improving access for people with disabilities.

Wandsworth council has also pledged to spend £100,000 on trees across the next two years, including planting 1000 new trees and maintaining the existing tree stock of 62,000.

They have also secured three more 'Green Flags' (awards given to parks that are maintained to a high standard).

The money for these improvements comes from cash levied by the council on developers in the area to pay for local infrastructure improvements.
