Battersea police are warning residents of a recent fraud scam.
Latchmere Police wrote on Twitter that the scammer impersonates police and targets elderly and vulnerable people locally.
A person calls claiming to be a detective from Serious Fraud Department stationed at a police station and may provide reference numbers, confirm your address and claim your bank account has been involved in crime.
They then ask you to call 999 immediately which directs you to another scammer.
This scammer will then ask for you to provide sensitive information which allows them to access your money.
The Metropolitan police want to make it clear that they will never phone a victim of fraud.
The police will never ask for personal banking information.
If the police ever need any other information they will request it face to face and will be in possession of a valid Police Warrant Card or in full uniform.
Police urge that should you be contacted by a scammer to hang up and call the police immediately, contacting them directly.
They urge people to look out for friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable.
